Steps in staining and polyurethaning replacement baseboards - 1) have a quality paint store (Clark Paint in West  Springfield is great at this!) match the old color using an old board for reference 2) sand the new boards lightly to remove and splinters and mill glaze 3) vacuum the dust 4) apply wood pre-stain conditioner if it's a soft wood like pine, to deter blotchiness of the stain 5) apply a high quality wood stain and allow enough time between coats for the stain to soak in but not dry completely. After each coat soaks in, use a dry rag to wipe off any excess stain, which tends to pool in seams and on edges, because it's a very thin product 6) once the color is correct, and the stain dries completely, apply 3 coats of oil-based polyurethane, allowing each coat to dry hard and sanding LIGHTLY in between with 220 grit for the first two coats, then steel wool before the final coat.

That is the process we use, and it ensures a durable nice finish. Avoid finishing new wood with combo products like Polyshades - in our experience, such products do not finish near as nice as the old standard method we use. Those are best left for touching up dings and bings in previously finished wood.

4 days - all walls two coats, 16 shutters, and a coat of white on nearly two sides of the trim, including the three dormers which are completed. Not bad for our first exterior this year! Regal Select High Build is self priming so it's locked down tight on this aluminum siding, and the finish is lap-mark free. If your old aluminum siding needs new life, please call us for a free estimate! We are booking now for early summer!

We use mostly Benjamin Moore's paints. Their Regal Select High Build has excellent self priming qualities. Unfortunately they don't make a standard black in that line. Their formula to make black is on the right in this image. Doesn't really look black, does it? Just a heads up here in case you need a black, self-priming latex. On the left is the new manu al formula done by my guy Dave over at Clarks Paint, you think it's better?
